ACCEDE Updates

New case study: Transport for NSW

Transport for New South Wales Success Story

A new ACCEDE case study explains how the Barangaroo Ferry Wharf project became a catalyst for change in how Transport for NSW (TfNSW) managed construction defects. It was time to end the Excel era, replacing bloated spreadsheets with a streamlined, cloud-based defect management tool.

“Unconventional” is how Brenden Wakim, Construction Manager at TfNSW describes his typical construction projects. “Our Infrastructure and Services Division completes infrastructure projects around New South Wales,” he said. “Train station upgrades to improve accessibility are very common, as are new or upgraded ferry wharves and transport interchanges. But unlike typical construction projects, we are often working in a live environment: with moving trains, live electrical wires, and 10,000 commuters walking through our worksite every day. Often, we will have a 48-hour window to complete key infrastructure while trains are stopped on a scheduled weekend train shutdown. This means that construction is very pressured, bringing with it both design challenges and an increased need for prefabrication.”

Update Rectified while closing in ACCEDE iPad app

This ACCEDE Defect Management System enhancement follows a suggestion from one of our users. The modification enables updating the Rectified flag (and any other status flags you have on your project) directly from the Close Items screen on the iPad or iPhone.

If you’re not happy with rectification during your close-out inspection, just un-tick the Rectified (or whatever your project’s flag is named) checkbox. Remember you can add more text – like a description as to why you are unhappy with rectification – by tapping the description in the grid.

Update rectified in iPad app

The newly un-rectified defect will be included in the next update notification sent to subcontractors.

This enhancement will allow quick and easy update of the rectified status during close-out.

Update your iPad/iPhone app to version 3.8 to gain access to this new feature.

Update Rectified while closing in ACCEDE Defect Management System

This ACCEDE Defect Management System enhancement follows a suggestion from Shane Young, Project Manager at Broad Construction Services. The modification allows users to update the Rectified flag (and any other status flags you have on your project) directly from the Close Items screen.

The ACCEDE defect management system allows users to update rectified items directly from the close screen

If you don’t want to see these new columns you can always hide them by using the Columns button …

Our punchlist software allows users to view or hide columns displayed

Shane says…

“I suggested to Wicketworks that it would be beneficial if there was a simple way to close completed defects and “Unrectify” any that were not acceptable on the same page. This would save time and allow consultants and clients to clearly identify that they have viewed the defect whilst ensuring that subcontractors are instantly made aware they have further work to do. Once again, Wicketworks was very quick to make these suggested changes and continued their great service.”

Heat Charts – New to ACCEDE Defect Management System

Heat Charts are now included as standard in the ACCEDE Defect Management System

We have recently introduced a new report format option – Heat Charts. Heat Charts display numeric counts analysed across two axes with the magnitude of the count displayed in a proportional colour from the red-yellow-green gradient.

For example …

Trade by Level Report showing Heat Charts

This example indicates quickly that most of our items are related to joinery, painting and tiling. It also highlights clearly a hot spot regarding painting on Level 02.

Users are able to define a broad range of heat charts by selecting which attribute is represented by both rows and columns. To get started, go to Reports/Defects Layouts then define a new layout along these lines, making sure you select “Heat Chart” in the Type drop-down list …

Naturally, the usual report filtering options are available.  In this example, the layout was designed to show a simple item count per level and at time of report generation, the items were filtered to show open items only …

Report Filters on ACCEDE Heat Charts

David McNichol, National Quality Manager at Broad Construction Services, says about the new heat charts …

“There is a lot of value in these charts as they can provide valuable data which will greatly assist in continual improvement. A heat chart showing how subcontractors have performed during the project can be fed back to the procurement team to assist in developing a quality supply chain. Another chart breaking down by defect reason assists making informed decisions for future works. The charts are easy to read and can be used in all areas of the business.”

Construction Defect Item History

With this enhancement, ACCEDE lets you know exactly by whom and when a construction defect item was updated.

ACCEDE now automatically records every update made to a construction defect item whether the it happened directly in the Control Centre or via a tablet sync. The details recorded include who made the change, when, what fields were changed as well as both the old and new values.

Have a look at the new History tab on the Punch List screen…

On this tab you’ll see a complete history of all updates to this construction defect item – with the latest updates displayed at the top of the list.

Viewing Defect Description & Columns in the Control Centre

This ACCEDE enhancement comes courtesy of feedback received from a contractor who has been granted access to the Control Centre to mark off his items as “Rectified”.  John from Knights Electrical commented:

“the description window was too small and to reduce other windows in order to expand the description column takes forever”.

We appreciate good suggestions regardless of their source made a few changes to ACCEDE to address John’s issues regarding not being able to see the entire defect description text…

1. Hovering the mouse over the description field will now show a tool tip containing the full text of defect description …

Tool tip displays full text of defect description

2. Users are now able to choose which columns are displayed in the grid. For example, you can omit any columns in which you are not interested and the defect description column will then take up the newly liberated horizontal space.

Just click the Columns button, deselect the columns you do not want displayed…

Display or hide defect description and other columns

and then see the result…

Defect description and other selected columns are now shownColumn selection will be remembered from session to session.

Upon emailing John that we had acted on his feedback, he replied:

“Thank you for your prompt response & action.

We do really like having the QA system in place, it has been a great help with this project from our point of view.

We feel it has vastly improved the efficiency & productivity of the project as well as the obvious quality improvements.”

Our pleasure John.
